1. Read the professor's syllabus, several times, so you know what he or she wants when you write the paper. Does he want the margins an inch or inch and a half? Does he want footnotes or end notes? 2. Go to the bookstore and purchase a copy of the writing guidelines your professor wants you to use, such as the MLA Style Sheet or whatever it may be. They always have a preference. It will give you directions on how to do a footnote or end notes, margins etc. 3. Go to the library, familiarize yourself with the layout of the library, ask the reference librarian to show you the various resources of magazines, books, newspapers, periodical indexes, the way books are catalogued on the computer system and where to locate them in the library. 4. Decide on the topic for your paper. 5. Select information from books, magazines, periodicals, newspapers, take notes from each source for your topic. You might want to photocopy some information to take with you while you work at home. 6. Use 4 x 6 cards to record the titles, authors, publication information you will be using from encyclopedias, books..........it will be easy to alphabetize them for your bibliography or end notes. 7. Use cards to write the information in your own words, number them. 8. Hand write or use your computer to organize the information in written format. 9. Do not wait til the last minute to do your papers. You will have more than one paper due from all of your classes. Start the day you receive the assignment. Allow 30 to 60 minutes each day to work on your paper. 10. You will finish early and then have time to prepare for mid term and final exams. 11. You will need a cover sheet, content page, outline, body of the paper, end notes at the end of the paper, or footnotes at the bottom of each page, and bibliography. Some papers you write may have news clippings, pictures, charts, graphs........depends. 12. Organization skills, work place, time management, same place and time each day will help you to be successful writing papers and succeeding in college.
