Federal loans are the best kind because the interest may be deferred until you graduate. The government also offered loan forgiveness depending upon your major and career (i.e. some teachers). Always grants and scholarships are best because they do not have to be repaid. But if you need a loan, fill out the FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov) and apply for federal loans first. There are several reputable alternative lenders (student loans that are not federal loans) out there but make sure you understand *ALL* the interest, fees, penalties, etc. before you sign the promissory note.
