There are at least five; 1. Teaching the student how to do research; 2. Relatedly, doing research should expose the student to research tools (databases, reference books, etc.) in a subject area; 3. Giving the student more in depth knowledge of a given topic; 4. Teaching the student how to think about and organize an extensive amount of information; 5. Perhaps most important, teaching the student how to write, and that two of the most important parts of writing area editing and revising.
