there are a lot of factors you haven't mentioned that affect the amount of student loans you would be eligible for. the best bet is to contact your school's financial aid office. have you filed the FAFSA? if you are a dependent student (according to the FAFSA), and you have less than 24 credits, and you will be starting college in the fall of 07, then you will be eligible for a stafford loan for $3500. whether it is subsidized or unsubsidized will be determined by a financial aid counselor at your school. if your parents apply for and are denied a PLUS loan, you could request an additional $4000 of a stafford loan (unsubsidized). these amounts are $4500 and $4000 for 24-56 credits, and $5500 and $5000 for 57 and above. if you are an independent student, you would be eligible for no more than $7500 (less than 24 credits), $8500 (24-56 credits), and $10500 (57 credits and above), provided those loan amounts plus any other type of financial aid you are receiving does not exceed your school's federal cost of attendance. the number of student loans you can have at a time is not regulated. a quick note about perkins loans - this is a loan that your school administers. the amount is set by your school. the maximum is $4000. perkins loans usually only go to the student who demonstrate the most need (as determined by your FAFSA). plus, each school awards the perkins loan differently. you could get a $1000 perkins loan at one school but another school might offer more, or no perkins loan at all.
