College Majors?

Asked by MMC
In college, I majored in environmental studies (ES). The department chairman for ES always said there were many ES jobs. But whenever I saw want ads, I saw very few if any ES jobs. However, I took his word because I was also told ~ 15% of jobs are posted in want ad newspapers, and since he worked in this industry I thought he knew what he was talking about. But right before I graduated, one of my friends said ES is a useless degree and universities create these programs to increase enrollment and more faculty positions. That made sense because the university I attended to always strived for increase enrollment. Unfortunately, after I graduated, I had a hard time finding an ES job. However, I was very, very lucky to find one. But I would NEVER recommend anyone to choose ES as a major. Has anyone heard of universities doing this type of stuff?

I don't know that they were necessarily being dishonest when they said there were lots of jobs in your major. Since that is "their world" to them, maybe there are lots of jobs they know of. Every college I know of is trying to increase and sustain enrollment.
