congratulations on being accepted to college! here are a few things that came in handy when i was at Penn State: flipflops for the shower (or any trip to the bathroom), a robe and shower caddy. snacks, but keep it healthy. you'd be surprised how easy it is to gain that freshman 15 (mine was more like 50!), cleaning wipes and maybe a swiffer, but wait until you get there. sometimes, there is a broom and cleaning supplies for each floor. headphones, ear plugs, and a sleeping mask (not all roommates keep the same hours or are as polite as hoped for). a small safe for valuables (just in case). get a credit card if you don't already have one, but use it only for real emergencies. things to make your space cozy and homey: pillows, a lamp, posters, x-long sheets (for some reason, all dorm mattresses are twin x-long), favorite books, CDs, etc. a camera and a journal to document your first year at school. make a point to join a club or something fun. making friends will make the transition easier. the gyms at colleges are usually awesome, so enjoy that too. they're free! talk to your roommates about ground rules, such as borrowing stuff, overnight guests, etc. it's a drag, but it'll save some awkward moments down the road. here are a few safety tips too: always travel with a buddy after dark, even going to and from a class if it lets out late. you can often call campus security to escort you after dark. many campuses have self-defense classes too. not only are they helpful, they're fun and great exercise too. if you go to a party, never let your drink out of your sight, keep a cell phone and cab money on you at all times, don't go anywhere with anyone you don't know (even if he's cute; give him your phone number so he can call you like a real man), eat something before you go out so you don't get too drunk too fast. take a friend with you to the party, and make sure you leave with that friend too. fraternities have a lot of rush parties during the first month of school and the guys are always on the lookout for 'fresh meat.' take your time with them. make them get to know you as a person and they'll treat you like a lady. the jerks will ignore you, but that's a good thing. have fun, but remember why you're there. you're spending good money to get an education, so keep the partying to one or two nights a week at the most. most students party on thursdays, so try to schedule your first friday class for later in the day; if you're a party girl. oh yeah, call home once a week, no matter what. you're parents are gonna miss you like crazy! woo hee, that's a lot of info! hope you have a blast at school. good luck!
