Remember your priorities (or think about them for the first time...?)! Too many students make unconscious decisions to prioritize fun, friends, and social status, only to sacrifice their long-term fun... friends... social status... income potential... etc. You don't have to be a complete bookworm, but you do have to put your studies first. Serious students do well, and learn quickly when it's okay to socialize, relax, and have a good time. Think of school as a job. You'll be called a "full-time" student, and that means that your parents, your professors, and tax payers think that you have a full-time job as a student. In other words... 40-60 hours a week studying. The easiest way to ensure this is to avoid doing the silly things that college students do... like taking naps between classes. You don't need a nap. Do your assignments and readings between classes. One of my best students told me a few years ago (when she graduated with honors), that she took this advice from me and decided to avoid going back to her room except after 5:00pm each day. This, she said, kept her on track and she still managed to have fun with her friends in the evenings. Good luck! You'll have no trouble if you just be yourself and remember your priorities.
