If you lived in a dorm during college, did any of your belongings get stolen?
I will be entering college as a freshman for Fall 2007. It is required that I live on campus for 1 year. I will be living in a typical dorm room (two people sharing the same room). However, I am so nervous about living with a stranger. I have this paranoid feeling that someone will steal some of my belongings from my dorm. I'm not saying that my roommate will be a thief, because I don't even know them yet. They might turn out to be a wonderful person, but there is always that chance. I'm buying a safe, but I hope that wont offend my roommate. I'm just nervous because I'll have a laptop, my ipod, and my clothes (which are very nice). I hope that nothing gets stolen. I know that it's kind of rude to think this way because you are supposed to trust your roommate and all, but I just can't get it out of my head. My question is, when you lived in a dorm did any of your stuff get stolen?

My son had a dorm roommate and it seems that guys just seem to borrow things from each other. We sent him to college with brand new matching linens, towels- we really sacrificed to get him all this brand new. After 1 year of being in the dorms, he moved to the fraternity house and all his belongings were picked over by other kids. There didn't seem to be any order in that place. There were even 4 guys in one room. The clothes were all over the room, messy. I would suggest to get friendly with your roommate and discuss this matter with her, offer to watch over her things and she can watch over yours when one of you is away. I think if you respect her items she will also respect yours. Expect to loose something just don't get way too upset as that is life. Mark your items to where only you know where to look for this mark and hope for the best. Remember not to get involved with the wrong crowd. Good luck!!!
