Can males and females room together in college dorms?
Probably a stupid question, but why not ask? Can college freshman room together in a college dorm? When the websites say the housing is coed, does that mean men and women are on different floors, or can they room together? Can someone of the opposite sex stay the night at a dorm? I don't get it..why are there RA's? How can they tell you what to do and go through things, you paid the crazy fees and are over 18...I just don't get it. Should I just get an apartment?

There are about 20 colleges across America that allow coed housing by room. www.csmonitor.com/2006/1228/p02s01-legn.html Most of the time, co-ed dorms mean that there are separate floors for men and women, or that men and women live on the same floor together. Whether or not a member of the opposite sex can spend the night depends on the dorm rules. This differs from college to college. Unless you're going to a very conservative school, you probably wouldn't need to sneak a boyfriend in--but if you have a roommate, it would be kind of rude to have a boyfriend in the dorms on a regular basis. RA's cannot necessarily "go through your stuff," but at some schools, there are room inspections--basically to make sure you don't have an illegal dog or stove or anything. They can also make sure that no one is living in the dorm that doesn't belong there--i.e., you have a boyfriend who needs a place to stay, and he moves into your dorm room. Mostly, RAs are there to keep the peace between roommates, answer questions, and be a mentor to students on the floor. Your privacy would typically not be intruded upon. Yes, you're over 18, but part of going to a college is agreeing to a set of rules set forth by that college. They have to protect themselves as well--they own the dorms, and they need to make sure nothing horrible (suicide, smoking pot, etc.) is happening. Different schools offer different levels of rules--most are not very stringent, unless you're going to a very conservative school. Hope this helps.
