If you are totally and permanently disabled, you may be eligible for cancellation of your loan. This loan relief is called "discharge." A final discharge due to total and permanent disability cancels your obligation (and any endorser’s obligation) to repay the balance of your loan. Your condition must not have existed when your loan was made unless your condition has substantially deteriorated so that you are now totally and permanently disabled. Total and permanent disability is defined as a condition that keeps you from working or earning money because of an injury or illness that is expected to continue indefinitely or results in death. To be eligible for this discharge, you must provide certification of your total and permanent disability from a physician of medicine or osteopathy who is licensed to practice in the U.S.
