The essay alone won't get you into college but from what I've learned admission counselors want an essay that let's them get to know you. It should complement what the rest of the application says about you. For example, if you are a very outgoing person and you do a bunch of activities - that is likely what your teachers are saying about you. If you write an essay about being a wallflower then they will think that something isn't right. Also - they do not want to read about how building a house for habitat for humanity changed your life - they have read that a million times over (A great cause by the way and worthy of your time but don't just do it so you can write about it). Your essay is your chance to stand out. What is different about you? Share a story about yourself that gives some insight? It is hard to write about ourselves so I suggest you think outside the box: Here are some suggestions - Do a Diary entry - That starts something like - Dear Diary - I just sent out my college applications ... then talk about what you are hoping for the future. OR Start with your favorite quote - Example "I once felt bad because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet" - Talk about the how the things your are grateful for in your life. Now get to work!
