Is it ok I wrote one of my admissions essays in third person?

Asked by Joie
One of my admissions essays asked about my major, why I chose it and stuff. My major is Journalism, so I decided to write the essay as a newspaper article, like someone else had interviewed me and was writing about my life. But it is in third person, is that ok? Also, the majority of it had already happened, but the title of the article is about me celebrating a successful career, so I did an overview of my "life" and the last paragraph I talked about finishing college (the school I wanted to go to) and my career and how long I worked there, which of course was made up but what I hope to do? Is this ok, or should I change the essay to first person and completely true? I mean, the admissions officers will know the last part is made up obviously, so is this ok? I have another essay too, so it's not like this is the only one, what do you think?

It's definitely a creative idea, but unfortunately, I don't think they're looking for that in the admissions essays, and if you get the "wrong" reviewer for that type of essay, it could hurt your chances of getting in. They want a straight forward, serious answer about why you want to go to that school and why you chose that major. I would switch to a first person essay that is 100% accurate. You can still incorporate your creative ideas into an essay written in first person, present tense by concluding that you hope to one day be able to give an interview saying X Y Z. This would show that you're thinking long term and can envision yourself being successful as a result of your education at that school. Good luck!
