Is the Academy of Art University in San Fransisco a good film school?

It's okay. There are far stronger programs out there, but the nice thing about AAU is that it's open admissions - you don't need a portfolio to get in. But know that, despite the open admissions, the coursework is challenging. AAU is sort of like... well, it's like they let anyone IN, but you need to be focused on your work in order to graduate. You can't go there and coast. The better film programs out there include: NYU, UCLA, USC, Vancouver Film, and U Texas Austin. You can also get quality film programs at good art schools like the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
