Why is it that my college counselors always try to discourage me?

Asked by Lisa
I'm at a community college and aiming to transfer to UCLA. My first counselor wanted me to aim for a CSU and my second counselor said I should either change my major (ecology) because of the amount of science or go to a CSU. Well as of now I have a 4.0 transferable GPA, so screw ém. Has this happened to you, and why do they do this?

They probably don't have many students who want to transfer to a top UC campus. BUT, - are your courses rigorous, or did you take easy courses to get all As? You should have at least one lab science, math through at least pre-calculus and preferably calculus, and some foreign language. - how are your SAT scores? UCLA may still consider them. If you didn't take, you might want to in order to strengthen your application. - basically, every smart person wants to transfer to UCLA. Perhaps they know the chances are more limited than you believe. People from top HS classes with perfect SATs and 4.3 GPAs don't all get into UCLA, you know. - I would apply to UC Irvine as well--it's also a great school, or SB or SD as I believe those have good ecology programs as well. Don't put all your eggs into one basket.
