Home schooled, want to go to college now?

Asked by Karen M
I am 22 years old, yeah I know I'm a little old for college, I decided at the age of 18 that it would be better to get married than go away to college...haha, who knows what I was thinking! LOL! Now I've finally decided that we're going to be broke our whole lives if one of us doesn't get a college degree. I have always wanted to do something in the medical field, I did go to school to become a Phlebotomist, and I am certified Phleb. but obviously, that doesn't pay the bills. My next step is going to college. We are thinking about going up to Albany, to live, right now we are about an hr from there, and I am thinking about going to the Albany College of Pharmacy. Problem is, I was home schooled for almost my whole entire high school years, and I am just wondering if a college like ACP would accept me because I was home schooled, I did graduate and I do have a diploma, and my grades were pretty decent...any advice would be wonderful! thanks everyone!

First of all, you are not too old for college. Many people go later than the normal age, and for different reasons. Your time off seems to have sharpened your sense of what you want to major in, which is a good thing. I don't think you'll have a problem with admissions, as long as you write a good essay and have people who can write reference letters for you. Depending on the school's requirements, you may or may not need to provide SAT/ACT scores. When appropriate, emphasize the maturity you've gained working in the real world and the independent, self-motivated personality you cultivated through your home school experience. It takes a self-driven person to succeed in home school, so I think the college would be more likely to accept you. Good luck!
