I am currently finishing up my 3rd year in a bachelor of science in biology pre-med program at a University in PA. I am from NJ and considering a career in genetics (genetic counseling) but am concerned about being away from my home state for another 3-4 years. I have decided against medical school because I cannot see myself sacrificing a family life until I am close to 30. Is there anyone who is/was in the same position and can offer some advice? I feel like I'm thinking of genetic counseling because genetics was my favorite class in college and it interests me but I'm struggling with making any final decisions.

You have many career options, genetic counseling is good if you also like people and counseling, you may also need additional training/school. Get a job in a lab either academic or biotech (you will make more money in industry), try different areas to see if Genetics is your favorite. I gave up a PhD and an MD for a master's degree in molecular and cell biology, and I am totally happy with my family life and working in the biotech industry. Dont go to medical school, my father did and I lost many years of time with him, if that is really a concern of yours. There are many other interesting things you can do, I think you're on the right track.
