Allegheny College or Slippery Rock University?

Asked by xpopxprincessx9x
I want to eventually become an elementary teacher, but right now I need to pick a college. I am down to Allegheny, which is a sort of a prestique college, and Slippery Rock, which is a state college. Allegheny does not have elementary education as a major, but I would major in something totally different, psychology or art and then go on to their PITMAT program, where I would get my Masters in teaching in 14 months (which I need to get to teach in PA anyways). So I would have the prestige name, but not major in education for 4 years. Or I could go to the state school, which is a lot cheaper and major in education for the 4 years. But would going to a state school it harder for me to find a job when I graduate? I have visited and liked both of the schools.

You don't need your Masters to teach in PA, but you would if you did not major in Education, I believe. All you have to do is pass your Praxis if you do major in Education. However, a Masters does look alot better on resumes and you would have more respect as well as a higher wage. I would suggest Slippery Rock only so you can major in Education, take the Praxis, and be ready to teach right out of college. After graduating, you can decide whether or not to go for the Masters. Just try not to limit yourself, and don't forget that it's always a huge benefit not having student loans after you graduate, so Slippery Rock looks pretty good. State schools are looked at just as well as private schools. West Chester University is a state school, but is considered one of the best schools for education in Pennsylvania.
