American college student. Do immigrants get free education and where can I find information on this issue?

Asked by Malisa G
I am a college student doing a research paper on how immigrants may be getting better benefits than Americans. I have done some internet research but an not coming up with the right kind of information. Any help would be greatly welcomed.

It really depends actually. On one hand, immigrants tend to have lower incomes than American families who have had several generations to establish themselves and accumulate a certain amount of wealth. Because immigrants tend to have lower incomes, colleges usually give them more financial aid, which makes sense. On the other hand, immigrants may not have been born in the US and/or are not US citizens. That disqualifies them for federal financial aid. That means that the only aid they can get is directly from the school, and most schools dont have that much financial aid for non-US citizens. I would recommend looking at the financial aid policies of a variety of colleges, and also the policies of government aid (i.e. Pell, SEOG, SMART grants, etc)....also loan requirements. The US department of education is also good.
