I am thinking about going to Austin Community College and transfering to UT?
I want to move away from California (too expensive and it's boring here) and to Austin, Texas. But I'm skeptical about starting cc here and then trying to transfer and finding out that I can't.

I don't blame you for wanting to leave California. As a warning though, Austin is very similar to the Bay Area and probably more boring. Although Austin is a decent town for activities for people in their early 20s, it's also a place where people mainly work (just like the Bay Area). As far as transferring from ACC to UT, that's very common. However, unlike in California it's not a guarantee. So, if you take the right classes and do well it shouldn't be a problem though (with the possible exception of a few majors). They have books listing which classes transfer for which majors and also a Texas common numbering scheme that lets you know what you classes transfer as statewide, just in case you don't get into UT-Austin. I transferred as a Computer Science major and didn't lose any coursework, but if given the option to do it all over again I would choose just to go to UT-Austin. The teachers at ACC in general are much better than at UT-Austin, but the social experience and future friends (business connections) are not as good.
