I am a high school senior from California, I have a 4.615 gpa (4.0 unweighted), I took AP Calc BC freshman year, AP Bio freshman year, AP French sophomore year, I got a 5 on AP Calc BC, I got a 2190 on SAT (CR660M780WR750) and a 34 on ACT (E35M33R31S35Essay9), I have comm service, a bunch of extracurriculars, I'm 1/16th Choctaw (Native American), and my family is having some financial difficulties (though not major enough for a loan-free fin aid package). I think my essay I wrote really sucked (I talked about how my father hasn't given me a good environment for learning - verbal abuse, favoritism, etc. - and how i've overcome it... but it was really unoriginal, bland, etc.). Is it likely that I'll get into Columbia Univ. (NY)? I put Neuroscience as my major and neurosurgery as my intended career. [I am so paranoid about getting in... I will die if I don't] [I also applied to NYU, Marquette, Fordham, UCSD, UCLA, Willamette, Brown, JHU, UC Berkeley, and CSULB.] thanx a bunch =) I forgot to add, I'm valedictorian and I am graduating in only three years. I'm hoping that that pair will show a few admissions boards that I can really flourish at these univ.s, but I don't know. Some of my friends have had similar records and have dealt with "Ivy League heartbreak"... oh well. Thanx again... I appreciate your optimism!

I think you have a very good chance of getting into Columbia, and an excellent chance of getting into NYU, JHU, and Berkeley. And you're virtually a lock at the other schools. I don't know if the 1/16 N.A. will do anything for you. Your SATs and ACTs are great, although your grades are even better than your standardized test scores are. Being valedictorian (or salutatorian) is excellent. The one concern I have is that if your essay really did "suck," that won't be good for you. But it's probably not a big deal. And try to relax so that you don't stress yourself out. Really, if you don't get into Columbia, you won't die. Seriously. (Although maybe you should have applied to one or two other Ivies if you wanted that?) In any case, though, I think you have a very good shot at getting into Columbia.
