How well known is the phrase 'beta' in relation to websites and products?

Asked by Meaghan M
Do you know what 'beta' means when referring to a website or new product? How techie are you? Do your non-techie friends know what 'beta' mean? I am trying to get a sense of whether that term is now prevalent even among people not familiar with the tech world. For example, would the phrase, "they launched the beta version of their website" be understood by a wide audience or does 'beta' still need to be defined?

I think it would be understood by most people with a reasonable knowledge of computers (as users) not just the techies. If you've used Windows, you probably know what "beta" (and "crash") means.
