Mac is fricking awesome. I lived in mac west but always hung out in mac east b/c thats where my friends were. You are close to all the buildings and it is great. I'm jealous you are just starting off there. I wish i could go back. Make sure you hit up Myle's pizza and chicken and cheese breadstix from campus pollyeyes. I didn't even mention mac beach. There is always stuff going on. Good luck and try not to spend six years there like i did.
