Does anyone else think affirmative action is incredibly outdated and unnecessary? I understand that affirmative action was put in place to offset discrimination, but that was 50 years ago. I am a freshman in college, and just decided to transfer from Bowling Green State University in Ohio to a local community college. My GPA at BGSU is a 4.0. In transferring to community college, I learned that 99% of the scholarships this school offers seem to be strictly for minorities who have about a 1.8 - 2.0 GPA. So, with a 4.0 GPA, the only financial aid I can receive is a $530 per semester grant from the government. And I know that someone is going to say, "You don't know what minorities have been through." Maybe I'm insensitive, but something that happened 50 or more years ago doesn't really affect your ability to learn in present day. And I'm part Cherokee, but everyone seems to forget that Native Americans were massacred when settlers arrived here, but I've moved on with my life.

Affirmative action will be around for at least another decade, if not longer, because minorities in America make up a substantial votin bloc of the electorate. For the most part they will not see that from your point of view. At this rate, though, we'll never find parity. We're going to have to agree on a point in time where we just start from scratch and allow all students to be selected on their merits. When that is ever going to happen is anyone's guess.
