Starting College in the Spring instead of the Fall! Please give some tips.?

Asked by Kristian
I need some advice. During the whole college choosing process I was extremely indecisive. I was accepted to college 1 (Umass Amherst) it was the college of my dreams, until i went to orientation where i became really homesick. So i decided to go to college 2 (Bridgewater State College) which was closer to home and the school my girlfriend was attending which i know isnt a good decision. Well just 3 weeks ago i came to the conclusion that i wanted to go to umass amherst because it was just a better school. But since i was indecisive and it was so late i couldnt go in the fall semester like all the other freshman. so for now i am stuck taking 3 classes at a community college until January. Now i just feel depressed because all my friends have gone off to college and im stuck here still with my mom and im really jealous. Plus i'm worried that i wont fit in when i get to umass because everyone will have already made friends and i'll just be the outcast. Also time seems to feel like it is dragging, so i already i know its gonna seem like an eternity until im able to go. Lastly im worried taht i'll be behind all the other freshman because im going to be going into the spring semester with only 9 credits if they all transfer. Im just really worried and stressing about a lot of things. any advice will be greatly appreciated.

You first need to realize that you are in this situation because you put yourself in there. This is one reason why it helps to start looking at colleges during sophomore or junior year of high school. However, you are focusing on the bad of starting at your choice college later and stressing about things that probably won't matter. You think it'll seem like an eternity until you get to the spring semester but the time will start to fly. The first couple weeks of college are a little long but once you get going it gets better and seems faster. Don't dwell. Make a plan for what you want to do once you start spring semester. Not everyone starts at a college during the fall semester. One year I ended up living with one girl during the fall semester and then she moved. During the spring semester I was living with a freshman transfer student from community college. She started to fit in right away. She met people in her class and got to know other freshmen through organizations she got involved in on campus. It's really hard to be an outcast in college. Not a week went by that I didn't meet someone new somehow. I graduated in three and a half years and up until the day before graduation I was meeting people and getting to know there. There are always going to be people there to meet. Get involved on campus. Everyone has to start somewhere. Maybe you could get on the school's website and see what kind of activities they have next semester and what kind of organizations and clubs there are. It doesn't have to be the beginning of the semester to join a club. People invite newcomers. If you go to a meeting or an event and don't like it then find something else. There are many opportunities. As for your last worry, yes you'll be behind with having only 9 credits but there are things you can do to help that as well! You could take an extra one credit class here or there during the semesters or take a class during the summer. Most colleges have summer sessions, winter sessions or both. When I was in college the most credits I took was 19 in one semester and the fewest I took was 13 in one semester. You can vary it to catch up. People take classes at different times too. Just because I was a math major doesn't mean I took the exact same classes or the same schedule as other math majors that started college with me. I think you'll be fine. You just need to focus on this semester and getting your work done. You can also contact the school and see if your credits will count. Try contacting the admissions office or emailing the departments those classes would cover.
