Like many colleges, Bucknell does not evaluate applicants on the basis of their numerical GPA, rather, the admissions analysis takes into consideration each applicant's class ranking. The thousands of high schools around the US have differing grading policies (some use + and - grades, some use pass/fail, some offer lots of AP courses with "extra" credits that bloat GPAs, some offer honors courses, some allow their students to inflate their GPA's with credit for "sports participation" or "office help". As a consequence, GPAs are not comparable from school to school, and the question is not "how did you do compared to everyone else in the country?", but rather, "how did you do compared to the other students at your school?" (where everyone was graded on the same system). The most recent class to be admitted to Bucknell (the class of 2010) had the following characteristics: 9,021 students applied 2,985 were accepted (33%) of those 2,985 offered admission, 923 actually enrolled 95% of the accepted applicants were in the top 20 percent of their graduating class - in fact, 82% were in the top 10 percent of their class. The median SAT was 1314 (half scored above 1314, half scored less than 1314) The median for engineering students was slightly higher (1353). Of the 923 enrollees, 127 (13.8%) elected a major in the sciences - engineering was the most popular declared major. Is it a good college for premed? Any school is a good college for premed, so long as you work carefully with your college advisor to identify those biological science and chemistry courses that will best prepare you to present a solid undergraduate resume - and, of course, presuming that you do well in those courses. Also make sure that you take the time to develop more than just an academic pedigree - medical schools look for "well rounded" students who have demonstrated an interest in the social betterment of their communities - get involved in charitable work and contribute your time to social organizations. Good luck to you!
