What type of college is best for pre-med: a small liberal arts school or a big university?

Asked by TJ
To achieve the highest possible GPA and receive the best chances to receive admission to med-school, what type of school is best? I'm considering some such as: University of Michigan Davidson College Carleton College USC Stanford Albion College Creighton University Washington University in St. Louis any preference? and would i be better off with a high GPA at an easier school or a lower one at a school with a great rep (like stanford)? liberal arts colleges are notorious for grade deflation. however, i love the one on one attention, and there is typically more in depth research and opportunities. but at the same time, i read that med-schools take your gpa as it is, and that is that.

Pre med is pre med - no difference where you study it. It boils down to what kind of school you like. I like small schools where professors give you individual attention - but that is me. I don't know what you mean by easier school. Harvard for example is well known to practise grade inflation - some ridiculously high percentage of students get honours from there. Yet its courses are quite rigorous. Harvey Mudd for example also has just as rigours and challenging a program but only 4 students its its entire history have gotten straight honours. It has nothing to do with if the school is easy or hard - it has to do with the policy of the schools as far as marking and extra credit goes. However those schools with grade inflation like Harvard are well known and will be taken into account by medical school admissions staff. Check out: books.google.com/books?hl=en&id=NdQW87vX7rgC en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grade_inflation Of those that you mention I would go to Carleton. However also consider Harvey Mudd, Kenyon and the New College Florida www.princetonreview.com/college/research/bestvalue/bestValue.asp www.nytimes.com/2006/07/30/education/edlife/gems.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&sq=20%20Hidden%20Gems&st=nyt&scp=1 Thanks Bill
