International Baccalaureate?

Asked by kaymay09
I'm enrolled in the IB program, but I only chose to take IB Economics and IB Biology. I'm still not clear on what this means for colleges. Do I have to be an IB diploma candidate to receive college credit, or do I simply have to get a 5 or above on the IB exam in the individual subject? By the way, the colleges I'm looking at and wondering about are: Bates College Boston College Boston University Bowdoin College Brown University Colby College Fordham University George Washington University Georgetown University Johns Hopkins University McGill University New York University Tufts University University of Vermont

You do not need to be an IB diploma candidate. But it's honestly strange that you are only taking two. I know that Johns Hopkins University and Brown University almost force you to do the diploma if you even want to recieve an acceptance letter, because they look very strongly upon academic rigor throughout ones high school career. Taking part in the IB Diploma is not a rare case. In fact, 70% of my grade is with the IB Diploma. I know it's a pain writing the Extended Essay, taking Philosophy of Relgion, taking Theory of Knowledge, taking four other IB courses, but seriously if your even thinking about applying to the top 20 schools the IB is almost an obligation. I could speak for Johns Hopkins University though because I work part time in the admissions and the people who read your application will almost always deny you if you had not attempted the IB Diploma. In fact, I don't know anyone at my school who got accepted without the IB Diploma. It's crucial to do it, so do it.
