FIT (New York) or FIDM (LA)?
I'm only in my first year of college, but I am hoping to transfer out to a good fashion school on the mainland (i'm from hawaii) to increase chances of succeeding in the industry..(at least by 2009) Money is a real obstacle... but anyway can anyone help me out and tell me which school is better? I heard that FIT is more affordable, but there's such a big hype on FIDM...

FIT, no doubt. FIDM has a lot of hype, yes, but it's exactly that - hype. They don't have a great rep in the industry. FIT, however, has an EXTREMELY strong reputation, and going there can really open doors for you in the industry. And you're right - it does tend to be a bit less expensive than some other, comparable schools, because it's state supported. It's part of the SUNY college system. Another top fashion program you can look at is Parsons. If you're looking at California, I like the Academy of Art University (good rep in fashion, although some of the other programs are just okay) as well as Otis. In the NY area, I also like Pratt and RISD. Kent State U, oddly enough, also has an extremely well ranked program in fashion design, and because it's a state school like FIT, the cost may be lower than for private schools. Well worth checking out. But the Ivy League of fashion? That's FIT and Parsons. No matter where you go to school, make sure that you do an internship in the field before you graduate, and that you have a very solid portfolio when you come out. That'll make it far more likely that you'll get a job when you graduate.
