Living in mainland now, but I want to attend college in Hawaii. I am also changing majors. Help?
I moved to the mainland from Hawaii 4 years ago, I am currently in my freshman year at a community college. I have changed my major once, and now I truly know that I want to become an elementary school teacher. Since I have moved to the mainland, I have had my hopes set on moving back to Hawaii. I really want to attend school in Hawaii and then right after be able to find my job and everything else. So here are my questions: 1. I don't know what to do about this year, I am taking classes that I do not need, I need to change my major to education, which major do I change it to, to get an Associates degree and be able to move on to a university to get a BA in elementary teaching? 2. What are all my options of changing my degree and going to school without being behind? 3. Do I need a Associates degree in Education to be able to get my BA in teaching? Or can I earn my Assoc. degree in Human Services and then go to a university and spend my two years there getting a BA in teaching?

First of all, if you are planning to pursue a degree in Education, you would apply for the Bachelor of Education (BEd), not a Bachelor of Arts in Education. Most universities in Hawaii offer BEd degrees. My suggestion to you, take a look at the university's website in Hawaii. Look at the General Education requirements and sit with your advisor to select courses that will transfer from your community college (CC) to the university in Hawaii. For example, at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), you can research which classes from your CC will transfer to UHM by looking at the Admissions and Records website under the "Transfer Credit Search". No, you do not need an Associates degree in order to be admitted to a BEd program. However, if you pursue an Associates degree at your CC, make sure that you take courses that will fulfill both your Associates degree program as well as the General Education requirements at the university you are interested in transferring to. Best wishes on your college career! Aloha!
