Every incoming student attends Orientation, where they will meet an upperclassman who is in the same college and/or major as they are. This leader will be in charge of a group of several students who are studying in similar fields. During Orientation, you will become more familiar with the campus and the people living around you. After Orientation, you can always go to your RA (Resident Advisor) for help/advice. They live right on your floor. Also, all freshmen live on North Campus, which helps you to find new friends. On North Campus, there is a place called the Carol Tatkon Center, which is a center especially geared towards helping freshmen adjust to life at Cornell. A writing walk-in service is offered there if you want to get your papers looked over. Academically, you are assigned a faculty advisor who will discuss your choice of courses and your plans with you. They are also available for you to talk about many things. At Cornell, there are a lot of resources available. So, to answer your questions, yes, the university does pay attention to its students and it will try to make the adjustment less frightening.
