Which schools do you think I have a good chance of getting into?

Asked by viv c
I'm applying to: SUNY Stony Brook Hofstra University NYIT St. Joseph's College SUNY Old Westbury Dowling College I have a 3.47 GPA, am ranked 37 out of 304 students, involved in a community service organization every week for about a year, and involved in the art club in my school, I took/taking 4 AP courses. I took the SATs last year (CR: 500 M:510 W: 430) but i just took them last week so hopefully my scores will be much higher. I don't know if I should take subject tests?

It'd be great if you do bring your SATs up. But as you are right now, I think: SUNY Stony Brook - reach Hofstra University - reach NYIT - fit St. Joseph's College - fit/safety SUNY Old Westbury - fit/safety Dowling College - Backup, seriously a safety school. You absolutely should get in there. Reach means you may not get in. Fit means you have a good shot. Safety means you really, really should get in there. Other schools in the area where you're looking, and which I think could be fits for you, include: Adelphi, Hunter College, St. John's, Pace, Brooklyn College, and Marymount Manhattan. A slight reach for you, but in the ballpark, if you like it, is Manhattan College. And from NYIT, maybe you're looking at a tech field? If so, you can also consider the Polytechnic Institute of NYU. If your SATs go way up, then you can even shoot for higher than what you have here. Then, it'd be more likely you'd get into Stony Brook, for example. It'd be a fit, instead of a reach. And if your SATs do go way up, I'd want you to add some other schools of the stature of Stony Brook to your list.
