Is the University of Georgia a good choice for a college to go to?
I'm sitting here as a sophomore in high school trying to decide what colleges I'm aiming for. My mom wants me to go to an ivy league but honestly, I want to go somewhere where I feel comfortable and not completely stressed out. I go to an advanced high school now and it feels like the stress never ends. Soo.. any comments on the University of Georgia? I want to major in sociology, stay on the east coast more towards the south (because I live in South Florida, right above Miami), and I want to be part of the band's auxillary(sp?) team. Dance or flag. I think I prefer dance though.. At my highschool it's pretty much all in one lol. Oh yeah, I also want to be able to study abroad for a semester or two. If you have any other options for me besides UGA then please tell me and give good reasons. yeah, I am a party girl but I know when to stop lol. One more thing. I'm not allowed to go to a historically black college or university.. we already agreed on that because my first choice was originally Howard but that's thrown out the window.

I went to the University of Georgia for undergrad and graduate school. Whether UGA is a good choice for you depends on what you're looking for in your future college. If you are looking for a school where you can get a great education and still have a little fun - then UGA is definitely the place for you. Athens is definitely a party town..but UGA has great faculty and great programs - including Sociology. But honestly, as a black female (I'm assuming you're a black female based on your avatar and your comment about HBCUs), it is kind of hard. Most of the social life that UGA has to offer will not be geared towards you. Not to say that there isn't a social life for students of color. Just about all of the National Black Fraternities and Sororities are on campus and they continuously have parties and programs throughout the semesters. There are also other orgs. such as NAACP, Black Affairs Council, NCNW, and many more that also have social events and informative programs. But, try not to exclude yourself from the other activities offered by the university as a whole and other non-minority groups. You'll find that although many of the social events offered by the mainstream of UGA don't seem to be geared towards someone like yourself - life at UGA (and anywhere else for that matter) is what you make it. And if you choose to go to events and make up your mind to have fun - you will. I'm a black female and I had a great time - I participated in campus events and groups as well as groups and events geared toward people of color. And I definitely identify with UGA everywhere I go. I hope this helps you out in your decision. God Bless.....and......Goooooooooooooo Dawgs, Sic 'em!!!!
