Should I retake the SAT and ACT to get into college?
I'm an incoming senior; I'm looking at Brown, Columbia, Wesleyan, Oberlin, Berkeley, Carleton, Kalamazoo, Haverford, and Northwestern. I've taken the SAT twice, I got a 2030 the second time (750 math, 620 critical reading, 660 writing). I've only taken the ACT once and I got a 32 (35 math, 30 science, 31 writing, 33 critical reading). As for subject tests I got a 740 us history, 700 math level 2, and 650 literature. I was happy with my scores, but then I got my AP scores back and I got a 3 in English lit, a 4 in us history, and a 5 in environmental. So now I'm thinking about retaking the SAT and ACT to improve my admission chances. As to other stuff, I'm ranked 4 in a class of 450, I have a 3.9 unweighted GPA (4.69 weighted). I'm the captain of the varsity field hockey team, officer in environmental club, and Opinion Editor in the school newspaper. I've done at least 200 hours of community service. Oh, and I'm taking psychology at the local community college. So are my scores good enough, or should I study and take them again? Colleges look at how much community service students do, like volunteering at cleanups, helping with elementary schools...I have not been to jail, haha.

I really should say otherwise, and it is your only weak spot, but since those are mostly highly selective schools, some of them Ivy League, and since you have two sub-700 portion scores on your SAT, I probably would take it one more time in the late fall (with study, of course.) The 600's are cutting it pretty close, and one is well below the 25th percentile for most of those schools. You could get in, but do you really want to leave it to chance? Best of luck.
