Wanting to go to the private college in town...?
I am a stay at home mom who wants to go to college, I have actually always wanted to but life keeps making it rather difficult (even before having a baby). I want to go to a college in my town...but not the community one. I REALLY want to attend the private college Hendrix, it has a great arts and writing program, along with other things I am greatly interested in. Money is a bit tight but we do have some extra, and finding someone/s to watch my baby is easy, the hard part is getting in. I need to take my ACT and SAT, how should I prep for those? Also, my GPA was awful. They said they will take circumstances into account (my mom was in and out of the hospital the whole time I was in highschool) and recomended I take one class at the community college...how would you recomend going about that? Also, scholorships would only cover four years, so how can I take as many classes as possible and still take care of my family? Any help/advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance! Oh, and if I get the scholorship/aid that covers room and bored, could I use that towards my home? Or still use the cafeteria plan? I have already talked to them, and they said -if- I do well on my SAT and ACT I have a good chance of getting in if I can give them a few decent sample of my work, but that taking one class and doing well in that would really help, but they seemed to think I have a good chance of getting in. They also recomended doing a work-study...and have some that arent terribly time consuming. I have looked in to the community college...they offer nothing I am interested in, they have ONE writing class and a basic english, and anything else is english history. Wait, they also have one journalism class, but thats not the kind of writing. Why go to a college that doesnt offer what you need? As far as my sons age, he will be one soon, and I'm working it so i will not be apart from him more then a few hours a day (tricky but my admissions councelor is really helpful in trying to make this all work for me) and when heis not with me he will be with other family (his dad, aunts, or grandparents).

I'm a divorced mom just finishing my degree at the private college in my town! However, I got here by way of the community college. I finished an associate's degree there, and took the SAT afterwards. My GPA from the CC and SAT scores were then high enough to get me into the private college. As far as finding time, most schools won't give you much in the way of scholarships unless you're a full time student, anyway. Are your children in school? I've managed to schedule most of my classes during the school day, and my mother babysits my youngest. It's tough, but most of the work you'll be doing is outside of class anyway - so you'll be home with your kids, trying to work amid all the distractions. It can be done, though; I'm graduating next May. Good luck!
