What do you think of IIT (Illinois Institute of Technology)?

Asked by David
Seems nowadays people barely know the difference between IIT and ITT-Tech, however, 30 years ago it was considered a serious contender with MIT and Caltech. Is IIT still considered a top-notch school? Should an engineering student possibly choose it over acceptances at Purdue and U of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign)? Is it making a recovery?

This is a really good question. I'm in the same situation, but I think rather than basing it on whether it's a "top-notch" school you should think about where you want to go. UIUC is a really big school and their engineering is crazy; their intro level classes are designed to weed out the weaklings. IIT is fairly small and designed to help all students. Then again, IIT isn't ranked in engineering but in architecture. Personally, I would choose IIT over Purdue and UIUC because I think it would fit my personality better and I can get the attention I need to succeed. Plus, IIT has great opportunities (especially research) since it is located in Chicago. Wherever you go, you'll be fine, but you just have to take hold of the opportunities you're given. I think the education you get at any of the places will average out to be the same...only difference is if you go to a big school, you'll have the name to back you up. :-) Come April/May, you should post what you decide, I bet there are lots of people in your situation.
