OK, so my parents want me to be a doctor/dentist, and do something in the medical field to make 100,000 plus a year. I personally like the medical field and wouldn't mind going into it, but I'm wondering about something more. I'm a senior in high school and I'm going to the University of Minnesota next year. I'm wondering what other professions are out there that can make 100k plus a year that aren't related to the business fields. I just think a doctor would be so prototypical and I'm looking for something unique, and a job that I could do in any country in the world. Also if it could be something unselfish and that would make at least the tiniest bit of difference in the world towards the better.

OK up until that last sentence I was going to suggest becoming a petroleum geologist or petroleum engineer but they are not entirely unselfish professions and there are arguments as to whether oil is good or bad for the world. But I'm a geologist so know that if you enter the oil industry now you can make over $70k with a MS and over $100k with a PhD, starting. There is unlimited opportunity to travel all over the world, and many people end up living in foreign countries. Geologists and engineers are definitely unique and the career is exciting and innovative. We are able to use new technologies to our advantage everyday. Of course chemists also are employed by the oil industry. You could also study any science and get your PhD and then become a professor - but it'll take awhile to make it to $100k a year. Then you can definitely travel a lot as a professor. Hmmmm... that's all I got. Felt the need to push my own profession! Oh, you could become a politician - but there's an argument about making the world a better place with that one too. In any case, good luck and know that you don't need to decide right away. Take a few core classes your first year to test the waters of different majors and then decide on whatever you enjoy the most.
