From the main page, you can click the "Student Life" link to read more about the school's culture. Durham is a medium size city with several nice neighborhoods and a few that are kind of rough. NCCU isn't in the nicest part of town -- but from what I remember is not in the roughest part, either. You should really try to visit the school before he makes his decision.
