Can I get into a good college with these stats?

- Rising senior at competitive public high school in northern Virginia - 3.25 GPA - 1750 on new SAT (hope to get up to 1900 next time I take it) - 680 on U.S. History SAT II - 630 on English Literature SAT II - 2 AP classes junior year (passed both tests) - 3 AP classes scheduled for senior year - Editor on school newspaper for 3 years - Two national awards won for sports writing - Have had articles published in local high school sports magazine - Golf team all four years (captain next year) I want to go to James Madison, Christopher Newport, Penn State, West Virginia, South Carolina or George Mason. Any one know if I can get in?

Yes -- you can get into a good college. You might even be able to get into a very good college. You will be hard pressed to get into a great college (at this point). Of the schools you mentioned, Penn State is the best. You may get in there -- but you may not. As for the rest -- I think you have a great shot at getting in (particularly to the public universities in Virgina) -- but I think you can do better than those schools. My advice -- apply to a few of those schools (including Penn State) -- but also apply to a couple of "reach" schools. Also take a few AP classes your senior year. You obviously have some writing skills. A killer essay will help you get into a better university.
