can anyone tell me what a community college is like?

Asked by i love house
I feel ridiculous but im really scared about going to school. I haven't really been in a school enviorment since 10th grade when i went into independent studies, and i did most of my schoolwork at home. So, is college similar to high school? I'm just scared it's going to be way too hard for me and im going to fail. I feel like I'm the only person feeling this way im just so nervous! Does anyone have any experiences like mine? and it's so dumb because im not even going to a university, it's just a community college. Oh, and it's santa ana college in case anyone has ever heard of it.

Every college is different, but I taught at a Community College in the early 90's and I would say this -- you will have a better chance of succeeding and learning the fundamentals in a CC than in a University because class sizes are small and the professors/instructors are able to spend more time with students indivdually due to their more open schedule and no requirement to publish. Essentially, Community Colleges have been made to re-acquaint returning students to the fast-pace of college-level learning, but most older students do better than younger students because they take their role seriously. If you are seriously attempting to learn something and your instructor is not a complete oaf, you should be able to earn a passing grade. Colleges generally have fewer tests/quizzes etc than a highschool class, so each is more important to your grade, but there are few classes that are so harshly judged in the first two years at any institution. The courses that you will be taking are 100 - 200 level courses which are very very similar to the broad based education of highschool. Some science and math courses may feel worse than that, but seriously, they are not designed to cull the student body, rather to prepare them for advanced study or introduce them to new ideas.
