Chances of getting into University of Hawaii at Manoa or West Oahu?
I graduated a year ago and took some time off for myself and work. I wish to attend UH at Manoa or West Oahu. I graduated with a 2.93 GPA and was captain of my football and track/field teams (dunno if that helps any). I'm from Out of State, however I was born and raised in Hawaii for 9 years before I had to move. Does the fact that I was born there help in the admissions or is it just residency status? My GPA is kind of deceiving. I went through a rough period of my life in my junior and senior years and got distracted from school work. I'm kicking myself in the butt for it now, but I want to know what my chances are, any insight would be very very much appreciated. Forgot to mention my most recent ACT score was a 22, but I plan on retaking it before I apply. also forgot to add that I plan on majoring in either Physics or Sociology, both are fun subjects to me. Hawaii's the place I wanna be, I'm 100% positive about that.

I don't know what major you want to pursue at UH. However, I don’t think UH is a good school except for Asian Studies program. 2.93 isn’t a bad GPA, though a GPA of 3.0+ is more advantageous for you. If you plan to go for a graduate program, your essays and GRE, GMAT ..... scores weight more than your GPA. And in your personal statement, you can tell them you had to go through a tough time in your life, which affected your GPA. Grad schools often care more about your passion, career and plan. You can apply to UH as your back up plan, but apply to other schools, which are at least in the top 120 of the nation. This is because the name of school plays an important role in helping you to get a job interview, though you have to do the rest to get that job. Work hard to prepare and you will get in a better school than UH. Good luck Don't let your low GPA intidimate you. My undergrad GPA was only 6.7 out of 10.0 but I got into a grad program in SUNY at Buffalo, which is in 115. I worked hard for my GRE test and prepared my application very well. SO I think you still have chance.
