Comparing University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign?
Asked by zuluI'm trying to decide between Wisconsin and UIUC to pursue an undergraduate degree in Computer Science. I've heard that the engineering school at UIUC is top-notch, but the social life, atmosphere of UIUC is rather sad as it's in the middle of nowhere and the only life is greek life. On the other hand, Wisconsin has a lot more options since it's in Madison, but the CS dept is not as good as UIUC's. Would appreciate it if anyone could shed more light about these two schools. Money wise both the schools are same actually. Also, they have a lot of reputation both nationally and internationally. Both are on 38th rank in US News and World Reports rankings and UIUC's comp programs are kind of better than UW Madison. But in most of the International rankings, UW overall is ahead than UIUC. I had the same dilemma in choosing where to go(I got admin. in both UIUC and UW Madison for Fall 2008 in comp. engineering), but I have decided to go to UW Madison because sure UIUC's nice college, but from the people that I have met and interacted with, Madison is far better place than Urbana-Champaign. UW is a top notch party school and since I am an international student I would prefer a place where I can easily interact and meet people. Also, comp. programs in Madison are in the Top 15 in US(I know that it is comparatively not as good as UIUC's who has in Top 10 and Top 5). I could be wrong many would disagree with my choice, but I have chosen Madison. P.S. We will meet if you come to UW Madison, who knows we could be roommates.
