Asked by K.G.S.I have been through the gamete with online universities. Has anyone found a university online that is accredited with transferable courses? A school that can prove that their students have gone on to receive a MBA or even a PhD and received full credit for courses taken. I have heard of Western Governors University (WGU), but it is competency-based (what is competency-based?). Has anyone received a degree from WGU and gone on either to receiving an MBA/PhD or perhaps a job with some government agency that recognizing WGU as legitimate. I am just tried of schools that have 'car' salespeople pitching the virtues and not turning the king's evidence. I did check Yahoo's achieves, most of the responses to this question are over a year old, and in the education world, a year is a long time ago.

There are some legitimate colleges and universities that allow you to take a number of courses online. These are usually "core" courses. However, the proprietary online-only institutions seem to be mostly a scam to separate gullible people from their money. I do know of a couple of instances where people were hired for a position on condition that they complete a higher degree, and they satisfied that with an online grad degree. Other than that scenario, you are wasting your time and money looking at online only. What you might consider doing is reviewing the web site of the closest public institution and see if they allow online credit for some of their courses. Also, check to see if they will accept some online credit - I do know of one accredited school that will allow U of Phoenix courses for up to 30 hours of intro courses.
