Capella University is a private for-profit distance institution of higher learning. Capella University offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral (PhD and PsyD) degrees in business, technology, education, human services and psychology. The school is owned by the Capella Education Company, a publicly traded corporation. It is located in the 225 South Sixth skyscraper in downtown Minneapolis.

Today, the university has more than 17,900 students from all 50 states and 56 countries. Capella has 76 graduate and undergraduate specializations and 16 certificate programs. Nearly 45 percent of it students are doctoral students.

Capella is one of 86 higher education institutions in the United States to have received the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (NCAE) designation by the National Security Agency (NSA). The designation is valid for the academic years 2007 through 2012.

History

What is now the Capella Education Company was founded in 1991 by Stephen Shank, former CEO of Tonka. In 1993, The Graduate School of America was founded by Shank and Dr. Harold Abel. In 1999, the company and university were renamed to their current, Capella Education Company and University.

Accreditation

Capella university is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The masters degree program in counseling is accredited by The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs CACREP.
